Here, where the modern town exists there was a fortress, called Bizonne, founded by Greek colonists in the 5th century BC. However, crucial earthquakes destroyed both the town and the fortress, and some parts of the rocks sank under the sea. In the 2th century the Romans rebuilt the town and it became an important military and cultural centre of the province, called Malka Skitiq. The city was destroyed by earthquakes and part of the rocks felt into the sea. Later the Byzantines used the fortress, too. In 14th century the town was a centre of the semi - independent Dobroudja principality, ruled by the boyars Ivanko, Balik and Dobrotitsa. It was called Karvunska Hora. Today, Kavana is a municipality, region that keeps the traditions in vegetable growing, vine dressing, fruit- growing and grain- production. The city is situated 2km away from the sea, at the end of Dobrojansko plateau. The resort part of the city is situated around a bay formed by a rivulet, called Dolinata na Avligite (golden orioles’ valley). The picturesque Kavarna seacoast is 42km long. It is slightly indented and there are small beaches all along. In the north of Cape Kaliakra in the “Bay of birds”, “Roussalka” resort is set up. A spacious artificial beach is created near Kavarna. The total area of Kavarna beaches is 74,000 sq.m. The underground waters in the region are part of its natural resources. Most valuable for the municipality are the mineral waters, which according to its qualities belong to the drinking water. Not far from Kavarna, Cape Kaliakra (Good Cape) juts out 2 km into the sea. It is the strangest place on the northern Black Sea. The straight shore juts defiantly 2 kilometers into the sea and forms the longest cape along the Bulgarian coast. The purple cliffs run vertically down and the 70-meter-deep drop seems to have been cut off with a giant axe. The openings of 20 caves gape on the edge of the slope. It is believed that Lysimachus, the successor of Alexander the Great, buried his fabulous riches there. The site is renowned both for its history and for its wild nature saved intact throughout the ages. The Cape is named after the most beautiful of 40 local women who, rather than be taken by marauding Turks, plaited their hair together and leapt into the sea. The Cape offers breathtaking views throughout the year. The contrast between the purple cliffs and the azure blue see is magnificent. Yellow irises, wild blue delphiniums, and pink thistles grow in profusion on Kaliakra in the spring and early summer. More Information
