Local Attractions and InformationPirin MountainPirin is the second highest and arguably the most beautiful Bulgarian mountain - it is a national preserve, included in the Worlds Natural Heritage list. The clean mountain air, the hot thermal waters in the swimming pools and the specialized ski facilities provide excellent year round conditions for recreation and sport. BanskoSituated in South - Western part of Bulgaria at the base of one of the most beautiful Bulgarian mountains Pirin, Bansko differs from most other Bulgarian towns you have ever seen. It provides an interesting combination of the untouched nature of the Pirin mountain and the unique atmosphere of an ancient Bulgarian town. Bansko itself attracts visitors through its 120 cultural monuments, its museums, Bansko’s school of icon painting and other local attractions. The houses were mostly built during the 19th century and together with the narrow streets with friendly bars, cafés, restaurants and small shops, Bansko gives the feel of an ancient, yet growing, vibrant and friendly town. The traditional cuisine of Bansko is well known and famous in Bulgaria. Bansko is a small mountain town which managed to escape from the mainstream of Bulgarian life and had chosen its own way forward, preserving its stone wall houses, melodic language, picturesque environment and vivid traditions. However, in the last few years Bansko has developed itself as the newest Bulgarian winter resort, recently discovered by foreign tourists. Furthermore it contributes to Bulgaria's tourist industry in its rapid development as both a summer and winter holiday destination. Golf The spectacular site of the new Ian Woosnam golf course, currently under construction, is in the Razlog valley at the foot of the Pirin Mountain, only 5 km from Bansko and the Spa resort of Katarino, which is a world class facility. The large and widespread area of 300 acre has been left untouched. Lots of trees are placed on the summits of the former Dunes to provide an excellent setting for the course. The 18 hole executive length golf course, with undulating greens and challenging water hazards, tests the skill of even the most experienced golfer. SkiingBansko boasts excellent conditions for all ski-related sports. The town is situated at 936 m above sea level allowing snow cover to remain permanently in place from December to April every year. The skiing conditions in Bansko are excellent and have improved dramatically since the 150 million Euros invested in the facilities over the last three years. The Pirin mountain has a predominantly “Alpine” character with three peaks towering above 2900 m. The skiing area comprises of over 65 km in ski runs and tracks for all types of skiers, from novice to expert. The ski runs are excellently, and professionally maintained with the assistance of snow machines and other equipment. There is planning for a further 60 km of ski runs to be commissioned over the next 3 years, amounting to an additional investment of 100 million Euros. Since 2003, the resort has been equipped with the latest state-of-the art Doppelmayr lifts, including an 8 passenger Gondola ropeway, 4 seater chairlifts, 2 seater chairlifts, T-bar lifts and platters. The night skiing experience is exciting and is available twice a week. Since 2000, the resort boasts 16km of cross-country ski tracks. More tracks are currently being planned, to be commissioned over the next 2 years The skiing season starts in early December and ends in mid to late April. Spa centre – Banya Banya is situated 5 km from Bansko between the three large mountains: Pirin, Rila and Rodopi. It is famous for its mineral hot springs with high therapeutic qualities. The healing effects of the thermal springs in these mountains have been famous since ancient times. There are more than 70 hot mineral water springs in Banya with average temperature of 58º C.
