President Georgi Parvanov is to decide whether Interior Minister Rumen Petkov should be dismissed from his post, following the major-scale scandal in which his name was implicated. The Socialists say that the launching of thorough reshuffles in the Cabinet depends on the President's decision on Petkov's destiny.
"The Head of State should make a statement on the issue, because it's a major-scale scandal. If the President remains silent, this will mean that he is shedding responsibility," MP Vladimir Donchev from the group of the National Movement for Stability and Progress said.
"Tomorrow is the X-Day for the Cabinet, because Minister Petkov's destiny will be decided," MPs from the three parties in the ruling Coalition for Bulgaria told our reporter.
On Tuesday, leaders of the Coalition for Bulgaria, PM Sergey Stanishev, Simeon-Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and Ahmed Dogan will have a closed-doors meeting.
According to unofficial information, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso insisted that the Bulgarian Government take firm measures as regards the scandals raging in the Interior Ministry. He also called for radical changes in some other problematic sector of the state apparatus.
